Who Is Leading Your Choice?

Walking in Purpose — Part 2

In Genesis 13, Lot lifted his eyes and saw a land that was well-watered and desirable.

He chose what looked good.

But as I thought about Lot’s decision, I was drawn back to another choice—the one made in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 3:6 tells us that Eve “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes.”

She saw.
She desired.
She chose.

Years later, Lot “lifted up his eyes” and saw the well-watered plain of Jordan (Genesis 13:10).

He saw.
He desired.
He chose.

Different circumstances, but a familiar warning:

What looks good to our eyes does not always reveal where our choices will lead us.

We face this today too.

A relationship may look right.
A job may offer more money.
A business opportunity may appear perfect.
A move may promise a better life.

None of these things are necessarily wrong.

The question is:

Who is leading your choice?

What You See Isn’t Everything

It reminds me of something as simple as buying a yam.

I’ve bought a yam that looked perfectly good on the outside. From what I could see, there was no reason not to choose it.

But when I got home and cut into it, the inside wasn’t good.

And isn’t that sometimes how life is?

We make decisions based on the information available to us, but we cannot see everything a choice carries within it. God can.

That’s why, especially with decisions that can shape the direction of our lives, we need more than what looks good to us.

We need God’s direction.

There Is Another Kind of Seeing

Something beautiful happens later in Genesis 13.

After Lot chooses and leaves, God says to Abram:

“Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art…”
— Genesis 13:14

Lot lifted his eyes.

Abram lifted his eyes.

But there was a difference.

Lot looked and chose.
God told Abram where to look.

Walking in purpose doesn’t mean ignoring what is in front of you. It means refusing to let what you see become your only guide.

Sometimes what God chooses for you may not initially look like the best option.

And sometimes what looks perfect may lead you somewhere you never intended to go.

This Has Always Been About Choice

From the Garden of Eden, humanity has wrestled with the same question:

Will I trust what God has said, or will I allow what I see and desire to determine my direction?

Deuteronomy 30:19 says:

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.”

God has given us the ability to choose, but every choice has a direction attached to it.

So before choosing the relationship, the career, the opportunity, the move—or any major step—don’t ask only:

Does this look good?

Ask:

“God, are You leading me here?”

Because walking in purpose isn’t simply about making the choice that looks best.

It’s about allowing God to lead the choice.

Reflection

Is there something in your life that looks so good that you’ve stopped asking God whether it’s good for you?

Are you asking God to lead your decision—or asking Him to bless a decision you’ve already made?

Prayer

Father, teach me to see beyond what is attractive to my eyes. Search my heart and reveal anything influencing my choices more than You. Help me not to lean only on my own understanding, but to acknowledge You in every decision.

Direct my steps and give me courage to follow, even when Your way looks different from mine.

May my choices lead me closer to You and into the purpose You have for my life.
